What’s The World Coming To? …By Susan Lute

bigstock-Phoenix-1732697Saturday Rose City Romance Writes had their annual holiday party. There was lots of hugs, kudos for the good and bad, and great conversation about the state of the industry, our precarious place in it, and the craft of writing. And the elephant in the room – the dreaded marketing. You already know the consensus was no one knows what works anymore, if they ever did.

My current project is the second book from The Dragonkind Chronicles. It’s about the youngest Pen quint from Dragon’s Thief and his quest to not only find, but to reunite with his dragon, all amidst the backdrop of a villain’s ambition to take over what’s left of our world thirty-three years in the future. The heroine is Sage Turul, a phoenix who’s been called from her wheel of rebirth too early and has lost her ability to regenerate and rise from the ashes of life. The story still needs some refinement, but you get the idea. She has Carlton’s dragon. He wants his beast back.

According to Wikipedia a phoenix is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor.

In today’s world the analogy of the phoenix can be applied on so many levels. Aren’t you glad I’m not going very far with this? World-wide the human race is in trouble. Individual countries are losing their footing and need a rebirth. People, wherever they are, are on the brink, or in the process of being reborn from the ashes of their old selves. Me included.

December 21, 2012 – I think – is about rebirth. There are so many ancient predictions surrounding the end of an age, this age, on winter solstice. I’m fascinated by the many threads leading here.Phoenix bird figure isolated

So is Keeper Of The Dragon – metaphorically speaking – about a new publishing world rising from the ashes of its predecessor? Is it about Sage Turul finding her rebirth? Or is it about me, Susan Lute, author on a journey, rising from the ashes of her old self?

I guess we’ll see.

Where will you be on December 21, 2012 at 11:12 UTC (coordinated universal time)? It’s a Friday. I’ll be working.

  1. I’ll be writing, too!

As as a Scorpio, I’m all over the ideas of rebirth, renewal, and starting over. I’m cheering for you, Su, as well as the rest of the world.

  2. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if entire countries could have a “mulligan”? And then do it right the second time? Of course, there would still be disagreements about what “doing it right” looks like. 🙂

My answer to what your book is about is YES. All three of course. On December 21st I will be writing, as I am every day. What better way to spend a life?

Happy Holidays, Su and all the Janes!
